The following article of mine is published in Spanish in the newspaper Gente de América. It is a summary of various prophecies I have made on different topics over the last 10 years, combined with current developments.
The world is at a historic turning point. With the political rise of Donald Trump and his entourage, the Western hemisphere is facing a new direction. It is increasingly turning its back on liberal-democratic values as we know them. What was once considered a unique selling point of the West is now slowly but surely being replaced by autocratic structures. With Trump, the United States, once the driving force of the liberal world, is on the cusp of a change that will affect not only America, but the whole world.
A new era: the Western model has had its day
The collapse of the Soviet Union at the end of the 1980s marked the victory of the Western model: so-called liberal democracy, free markets and human rights seemed to be recognized as universal values. However, with increasing economic and political instability in Western countries and the rise of authoritarian regimes such as China, Russia, the Middle East and, in some cases, India, the tide has turned. Russia and China in particular, once regarded as outsiders in the global power structure, have established themselves as autocratic counter-models and are increasingly gaining influence.
While the new power hegemony is clearly controlled by authoritarian systems, liberal democracy is losing itself in confused idealism, such as in feminist foreign policy (Germany) or the fanatical “woke” movements. America has recognized that this is not a promising development for the future and has “invented” Trump. Under Trump, the USA can now expect a transformation similar to that of the USSR: a structural change that will be both geopolitically and economically promising for the future.
The geopolitical realignment: the West following in the footsteps of China and Russia
The rise of autocracies in the Western hemisphere represents a tectonic shift in the global order. Until now, China and Russia were seen as the antithesis of Western democracies. However, the increasing control of the media, judiciary and economy in the USA will serve as a blueprint for other Western countries.
A central aspect of this transformation is the growing control over economic and financial structures. Central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) are already gaining in importance, enabling greater state control. China already has a social credit system that evaluates individual behavior - a development that will also be unstoppable in the West. Some European countries are already working on similar systems.
The end of liberal democracy
With these changes, the world will look completely different in ten years' time. Liberal democracy, as it was established after the Second World War, will be nothing more than a memory in a decade at most.
The parallels with the late phase of the Soviet Union are unmistakable: Back then, an old system collapsed and a new, unexpected pattern of order emerged. Today we are facing a similarly profound turning point, only this time it is not communism that is being dissolved, but liberal democracy.
The fact is that the last few decades have shown politically and economically that liberal democracy has no future in a politically divided and crisis-ridden world. Seen in this light, the West's turning away from liberal democracy is regrettable from an idealistic point of view; from an economic and geopolitical perspective, however, it is the only way to not only survive in the global competition for supremacy and control, but to be recognized at all.
